ImageWith an 2-6 7-6(4) 6-2 win over Italy’s Antonella Serra-Zanetti, Patty Schnyder reached the second round at the Championships in Wimbledon. In her first match on grass this season, Patty had problems to find her rhythm. The number eight seed Swiss lost the first set clear with 2-6 and also in the second set Patty was in trouble. The Italian was leading 5-4 and served already to the win of the match when Patty took her last chance to find back in the match. The Swiss broke back and won the second set in tiebreak 7-2. Now Patty had improved her game, in the third set she dominated clear and won the match deserved. Patty’s next opponent will be Severine Bremond. The 25-year-old French, who is currently the number 129 in the WTA- ranking, beat in the first round Anastasia Yakimova from Belarus in straight sets.
Patty already takes part for the eleventh time at the Championships, but the Swiss never was really successful in Wimbledon. Her best result so far was in 2001, when she reached the third round.

Image Patty Schnyder’s French Open campaign has ended at the hands of Venus Williams, going down in three sets 4-6 6-3 6-2 in a match that lasted just under two hours.  Williams prevailed in the fourth-round match to extend her stranglehold over the Swiss player to an unblemished 8-0 head-to-head lead.
The first set see-sawed with only three holds of serve, before fewer unforced errors from the Schnyder racquet resulted in a 6-4 one-set lead.  However, the joy and lead for the 7th seed was short-lived, as Williams found range on her groundstrokes and netplay to outplay Schnyder and hold her to only one unconverted breakpoint opportunity throughout the remainder of the match.

Schnyder was one of three seeded players to lose today despite outranking their opponents, as No. 1 seed Amelie Mauresmo bowed out to Nicole Vaidisova, while Dinara Safina outlasted Russian compatriot Maria Sharapova, and will now begin grass-court preparations ahead of Wimbledon, which begins later this month.

ImagePatty Schnyder’s defeat against Germany’s Martina Muller was the biggest upset on Wednesday at the Internationaux de Strasbourg. The Swiss, who decided short-dated to make a start at this Tier III tournament one week before the French Open, lost her second round match against the German 4-6 3-6.

For the 23-year-old Muller, the currently number 83 in the WTA ranking, it was the first win over a top ten player in her career. Patty, who had as the top seeded player in Strasbourg a first round bye, was totally discontented with her game. “I don’t know what happened today,” said the Swiss, who just won three matches on the european red clay this season so far. “I just couldn’t get into the match. I didn’t have any feeling for the court today.  At least I got one more match under my belt before Roland Garros.” The second Grandslam tournament this season will start on next Monday, May 29th.
