 The Internazionali d’Italia tournament in Rome is finished for Patty. The Swiss lost in the third round against the former world number one Venus Williams 6-7(2) 6-3 1-6. It was Patty’s seventh defeat in a row against the American, who won the Rome tournament in 1999.In the evening match on the center court Patty was early broken by Venus. But when the American served to the win of the first set Patty broke back and reached the tiebreak. Venus won the tiebreak clear with 7-2 but with great fighting spirit Patty fought back.She broke Williams twice and won the second set 6-3. In the beginning of the final set Patty failed a break chance aginst Venus. The American now played too powerfull and after 2 hours and 7 minutes she won the match. In the quarterfinals Venus will face Serbia’s Jelena Jankovic. As next Patty will play at the French Open in Paris. The second Grandslam tournament this year will start on Monday, May 29th. |
