Patty Schnyder started successful into the last Grandslam tournament of the year. The Swiss beat Israel’s Anna Smashnova 6-1 6-2 in just 65 minutes and advanced to the second round at the US open in Flushing Meadows. The seventh seeded Swiss showed a very effective performance, she could use four of her five breakchances against Smashnova, while the Israeli couldn’t use none of her seven breakchances against the Swiss.
In the second round Patty will face Sofia Arvidsson. The 22-year-old from Sweden, who is the number 38 in the WTA ranking, beat in the first round Spain’s Conchita Martinez-Granados in two sets. There was only one match between Patty and Arvidsson so far. It was in a Fedcup match in 2002, when Arvidsson beat the Swiss in two sets.
